Archbishop Mansell again urges opposition to health insurance mandate
HARTFORD – For the second time this month, Archbishop Henry J. Mansell is asking priests of the archdiocese to use their pulpits to urge parishioners to voice opposition to the new federal health insurance mandate. In a letter sent by postal and e-mail Feb. 22, the archbishop asked priests to insert a fact sheet about the health insurance mandate in their parish bulletins. The mandate requires Catholic institutions to provide insurance coverage for contraceptives, medications that induce abortions and sterilization, all of which violate the Church’s moral teaching. "Enclosed also is a copy of a letter from Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Bishop William Lori concerning the health insurance mandate coming from the Federal Offices. You may find it helpful in speaking to your parishioners concerning this very important issue, especially as it relates to religious liberty," the letter said. "I encourage you to speak out on this matter, underscoring the critical importance of this matter at this time in the history of the United States," the archbishop added. To read the fact sheet, click here.
The archbishop has been relentless in speaking out against the mandate in a number of public forums, including in his monthly column in The Catholic Transcript, and as a guest on radio and television programs. To hear a podcast of his Feb. 23 appearance on WSDK 1550 AM radio, click here.
