Definir el cristianismo no es cosa fácil. Benedicto XVI destaca lo esencial cuando enseña: "la fe no es una adhesión intelectual a una doctrina, sino una relación personal con Cristo". Quizás esta es la gran diferencia entre acoger una ideología de moda, pertenecer a un partido político, un club, ser aficionado de un equipo deportivo, o profesar la fe cristiana.

Un encuentro personal con el Señor a través de la fe, la conversión, la lectura y cumplimiento de su palabra, la Eucaristía, la caridad, y la oración hace que se descubra que además de una doctrina estructurada y expuesta en términos racionales que es lo externo y visible, existe "Alguien" que trasciende los sentidos, pero que no por eso es menos real. El descubrimiento de la persona viva de Jesucristo, como Dios, lleva a la conversión. Por esta, mediante decisión personal, se lo acepta como Señor y salvador de la persona, comprometiéndose uno a ser su discípulo.

Frecuentemente los creyentes se dedican a repetir la Biblia o a recitar los resúmenes doctrinales, pero la doctrina que proclaman no está respaldada por una vida espiritual sustentada en una relación directa y personal con el Señor. Es lamentable que nuestra educación religiosa se limite a lo recibido en la infancia o adolescencia y nada más. Como cristianos necesitamos conocer la doctrina y dar cuenta del contenido de lo que creemos.

Otros creyentes cumplen los rituales de la Iglesia como una manera de buscar la gracia de Dios, se bautizan y van a todos los sacramentos y asisten semanalmente a la Iglesia pero no hay una conexión entre los ritos y la vida. Sus ritos son ritos vacíos que no se realizan con sinceridad de corazón. Pareciera que fuesen cristianos solo en el templo, pero no se ve el efecto de los rituales en la vida.

Existe otro grupo que se dedica a hacer mucha actividad social pero alejada de una relación con el Señor. De esta manera, su actividad no es más que una acción altruista o política vacía.

Al analizar la acción de los creyentes se hace evidente que la fragmentación de elementos importantes de la fe hace menos efectivo el testimonio y la evangelización. La fragmentación lleva a lo que se conoce como creyentes de cafetería: aquellas personas que deciden aceptar solo unos aspectos de lo que la Iglesia enseña. La mayoría de las veces, aceptan solo aquello con lo cual están de acuerdo y cómodos, sin preocuparse si son fieles al mensaje y a la voluntad del Señor. La elección es completamente subjetiva y se mira la verdad con relativismo. Se acepta la salvación con condiciones y no como Dios la ofrece a través de la Iglesia.

Hay que anotar que si los primeros discípulos hubieran procedido de esa manera, el cristianismo no se hubiera multiplicado. Ellos entendieron que el mensaje era superior a ellos mismos, y por ese motivo prefirieron ofrecer su vida antes que traicionar la verdad enseñada por Dios.

El punto unificado de toda acción cristiana es la relación y compromiso personal que se tenga con la persona de Jesucristo resucitado. Es necesario por lo tanto saber la doctrina, participar de los rituales y sacramentos y preocuparse por servir al prójimo. Lo anterior no es suficiente si no se lleva al corazón y se unifica en una relación personal con el Señor. Juan Pablo II lamentaba que "algunas veces incluso los católicos han perdido o nunca han tenido la oportunidad de experimentar a Cristo personalmente: no Cristo como un mero ‘paradigma’ o ‘valor’, pero como el Señor viviente, ‘el camino, la verdad y la vida’."

El proceso de seguir a Cristo comienza con oírlo, encontrarlo personalmente y experimentar la fe y la conversión como un don especial de Dios. La conversión lleva a la aceptación incondicional de Jesucristo y a la comunión con quienes nos rodean siendo solidarios con los demás. Esta vivencia nos impulsa a proclamar al Jesucristo que hemos experimentado a quienes no lo conocen y a nutrirnos de la gracia en los rituales de la Iglesia. Nuestra relación personal con el Señor y nuestra solidaridad con los demás son el impulso que mantiene nuestro testimonio vivo.
