Blue-ribbon-StJGroup01 Dale R. Hoyt, superintendent of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford, gestures as he speaks at the podium in front of dignitaries gathered for a program on Nov. 22 celebrating the United States Department of Education’s recognition of St. James School in Manchester as a national Blue Ribbon School for 2010. A similar celebration took place later that day at St. Martha School in Enfield, which received the same distinction. See photo gallery here. Story to come.

Seated from left on the stage are Archbishop Henry J. Mansell; Father Jeffrey Romans, his secretary; Barbara Mahoney and Olga Pirela, both of the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Communications and Outreach; Father Kevin P. Cavanaugh, Pastor of St. James Parish; Patricia Kanute, principal of St. James School; Adam Jeamel, director of public affairs for Gov. M. Jodi Rell, who read a proclamation; and Luis Spadaccini, mayor of Manchester. St. James and St. Martha are among 304 schools nationwide to be honored as a Blue Ribbon School for 2010 – the highest honor bestowed on a school for its academic excellence. The two schools in the Archdiocese join an elite group of 50 private and parochial schools and 254 public schools in the country to receive the recognition.
