BLOOMFIELD – Seven men will be one step closer to the priesthood when Archbishop Henry J. Mansell ordains them as transitional deacons at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Archdiocesan Center at St. Thomas Seminary.

Having completed Bachelor of Arts degrees in philosophy and four years of study in theology, they will continue their studies by providing pastoral care at various parishes across the Archdiocese of Hartford. Once they complete this requirement, they will be ordained to the priesthood in the spring.

The seven candidates and their current assignments are: Andres Mendoza Floyd from Colombia, Our Lady of Pompeii in East Haven; Mathieu Isaac from Haiti, the Archdiocesan Center; Didier Julian Cardona Marin from Colombia, St. Augustine in Hartford; Jorge Eliecer Castro Morales from Colombia, St. Bernard in Enfield; Timothy Edward Ryan of East Hartford, St. Rose in East Hartford; Nicola Nghia Huu Tran from Vietnam, St. Anthony of Padua in Litchfield; and Henry Alexander Avendano Varon from Columbia, who served at St. Teresa of Avila in Woodbury this past summer.

"I am filled with profound joy to ordain these talented and generous men who want to share their gift of faith and spirituality with the Connecticut community," said Archbishop Mansell.

The archbishop said that 40 other men are in a various stages of study for the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Hartford, which is a tremendous increase in candidates. Eight years ago, there were only six.
