NEW YORK – Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey into Night” is a masterpiece that is so difficult to act and to stage, it is rarely done. At the Roundabout’s American Airlines Theatre on 42nd Street this spring, an Englishman, Jonathan Kent, has directed a brilliant production of the play.

NEW YORK – Anton Chekov’s “The Cherry Orchard” is one of the few great dramas written in the last century. It is a difficult play to produce because it is a bittersweet drama that combines broad comedy and gentle, sentimental pathos and requires a stage full of gifted actors. Recently at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theater, the Maly Drama Theatre of St. Petersburg, Russia, under the direction of Lev Dodin, presented a troupe of gifted Russian actors who gave us a new look at “The Cherry Orchard,” in Russian with English subtitles.

NEW YORK – Winter has brought Maurice Hines’s grand “Tappin’ Thru Life” to the New World Stages on 50th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. It’s a unique autobiographical look at his family and his life on stage. At its core, it is a tribute to his brother and longtime dancing partner Gregory, who was three years his junior and died in 2003 at age 57.

NEW YORK – The best Broadway musical of the year is “An American in Paris,” a stage adaptation of the 1951 Vincent Minnelli film that starred Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron and featured not only George Gershwin’s brilliant 1928 tone poem to Paris, but classic Gershwin songs with lyrics by his brother Ira Gershwin.
