obit--Proulx_RaymondFather Raymond G. Proulx, 77, former Pastor of St. Thomas of Villanova Parish in Goshen, died on May 2, 2011, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury.

He was born on Feb. 7, 1934, in Waterbury, a son of the late J. Albert and Alice Pion Proulx. He graduated from St. Anne’s School in 1946, attended St. Paul’s School in Quebec, Canada, and graduated from the College of Montreal in 1951. He then studied for the priesthood at the College of Montreal and finished his theological studies at Christ the King Seminary in St. Bonaventure, N.Y.

He was ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 1960, by Archbishop Henry J. O’Brien at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church in Hartford.

Father Proulx began his ministry at St. Thomas of Villanova Parish in Goshen. He was an assistant at St. Thomas in Goshen, St. Therese in Branford and St. Peter in New Britain. He served as chaplain of the St. Jean Baptiste Society while at St. Peter. He then was co-pastor of St. Louis Parish in West Haven from 1972-83. In 1983, he was assigned as an assistant at St. John Vianney Parish in West Haven, where he also served as police chaplain.

Father Proulx returned to the Goshen parish in 1986 as pastor. He retired in 2007 because of failing health and was named Pastor Emeritus of St. Thomas of Villanova.

Father Proulx lived at Apple Rehab Farmington Valley, where he voluntarily served the spiritual needs of the residents by celebrating daily Mass and administering the sacrament of the sick.

He is survived by a brother, Albert Proulx of Plainville, and a sister, Therese Guay of Southington; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Ralph Proulx, and a sister, Agnes M. Hilario.

A parish Mass was celebrated on May 6 at St. Thomas, where Archbishop Henry J. Mansell celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial on May 7.

Burial followed in St. Thomas Cemetery. Donations in Father Proulx’s memory may be made to St. Thomas Church, 71 North St., Goshen, CT 06756; or to In House Vitas Hospice c/o St. Mary’s Hospital, 56 Franklin St., Waterbury, CT 06706.
