MIDDLETOWN – Fifty-eight Xavier High School students have received national recognition for their outstanding scores on the National Spanish Examinations that were taken in March and April.
Three students were recognized as national winners, earning the Premio de Oro (Gold Medal) designation by scoring above the 95th percentile of those taking the exam.

MANCHESTER – Theresa Oei may be the only person at her school who would use "really lucky" to explain her perfect score on the SAT.
The East Catholic High School junior was in Glasgow, Scotland, to compete in the World Irish Step Championships in April on the first day SAT scores were posted online.

MANCHESTER – Superior Court Judge David Gold appeared before a group of seventh graders at St. Bridget School, charged with helping them better understand the judicial branch of government.
The verdict, according to the students and their teacher, was that the judge was not guilty of letting them down.

NEW BRITAIN – Free summer basketball clinics will be offered for boys in fourth through ninth grades on July 17 at St. Joseph School, 29 Edson St.
The doors open at 9:30 a.m. Clinics will be from 10 a.m. to noon for boys in fourth through sixth grades, and from 12:30-2:30 p.m. for boys in grades seven through nine.
The clinics are being offered by the New Britain-based Prestige Basketball Clinics. Prestige’s executive director, Sean O’Brien, won the New England CYO Championship as both player and a coach at St. Timothy Middle School in West Hartford. He also was a member of the 2000 Northwest Catholic High School state championship team

Ten students at St. Bernard School in Enfield who were inducted recently into the National Junior Honor Society stand with their pastor, Father John P. Melnick, and principal, Sister M. Juanita Szymanski. The children are, from left, Samantha Lavoie, Tyler Noll, Francesca Kaufmann, Brendan Fahey, Sarah Cota, Stephanie Cota, Shannon Moran, Sarah Crowley, Jazlyn Veloso and Preston Lorenz.
Each year, the school’s chapter of the honor society recognizes junior high students who exemplify the pillars of the society: leadership, scholarship, service, citizenship and character.
"They are an impressive group of young adults – their teachers, parents and peers are proud of them," said Sister Juanita.
