WEST HARTFORD - Northwest Catholic High School welcomed 171 freshmen from 30 different towns for the 2009-10 school year, along with 19 transfer students and two new teachers. Most of the freshmen (40 students) come from West Hartford, with Bloomfield (18 students) and Windsor (16 students) ranking next. The class of 13 also represents a real family affair: 67 students, or 39 percent, are siblings of current students or alums of the school, while 25 students have a parent who graduated from Northwest Catholic. Opening-day jitters were allayed by more than 100 members of the senior class, who returned to school early to assist with freshman orientation. Of this years 19 transfer students, 11 are from overseas. The two new faculty members are Monica Kirschmann and Sister Angela Marie Castellani of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist. Ms. Kirschmann, a summa cum laude graduate of Fordham University who was selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa, earned her masters degree from the University of Chicago and has been teaching for the past three years at Paramus Catholic High School in New Jersey. She will teach English. Sister Angela Marie is a native of Italy and holds a masters degree in law and a Juris Doctor degree as well as a masters degree in moral theology from Holy Apostles College in Cromwell. She joins the religion department. Deacon Richard Santos, who has taught at Northwest Catholic since 2000, has been named chairman of the religion department. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Holy Apostles College. Margaret Williamson, beginning her 10th year as principal, this year has added the title of chief administrator, as well.
