stmarys_tree ADVENT WISHES – Fourth-grade students at St. Mary School’s in Newington surround an evergreen Christmas tree that they decorated with hand-made ornaments and delivered recently to the Sisters of Mercy convent on nearby East Cedar Street. In back row, from left, are Stephanie Kubish, Kaylie Torres, William Peck, Shayne Rice, Justin Miguel, Jack Smith and Joseph Chung. In front row, from left, are Myles Boivin, Dakota McMahon, Harvey Rosa-Breton, Lindsey O’Bright and Maeve Maltese. Directed by art teacher Lori Oleasz, the students made ornaments using découpage and inscribing Christmas wishes in such words as hope, love, faith, joy, kindness and peace. Mrs. Oleasz said, "The decorated tree was intended to be a living, tangible prayer for a blessed Advent for the sisters on behalf of all the children of St. Mary School." (Photo submitted)
