MILFORD Two students at Lauralton Hall have been singled out for honors recently.

Nadia Oberson, ’12, daughter of Sonia and John Oberson of Shelton, has been named the Lauralton Hall Hugh O’Brian Leadership (HOBY) ambassador for 2009-2010. Monica Laskos, ’10, daughter of Peter and Jeanet Laskos of Shelton, has been named the Lauralton Hall winner of the DAR Good Citizen designation and scholarship.

HOBY is the nation’s premier program exclusively designed for high school sophomores. It provides lifelong leadership development opportunities. Annually, more than 20,000 public and private high schools are invited to select an outstanding 10th grader to attend a three- or four-day leadership development seminar.

Miss Oberson is considered an exceptional student leader who is very involved in the service of helping others and leading by example. Outside of school, she is a member of the St. Margaret Mary Parish’s youth group and a weekly volunteer at Spooner House homeless shelter in Shelton.

At school, she is a member of nine clubs and is an officer in two: Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and the Humanities Club. For SADD, she participated in a Sticker Shock campaign to raise awareness about underage drinking and a walk to raise money to prevent drunk driving. For the Humanities Club, she is the treasurer, helps run fund-raisers for organizations, and prepares 32 sandwiches, beverages and snacks each week for Beth-El Shelter in Milford.

Sponsored by the Freelove Baldwin Stow Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, the DAR Good Citizens contest recognizes an outstanding young person in the senior class. Students selected as good citizens, one from each of the four Milford high schools, will be awarded a certificate and a prize of $100 on March 11.

The student selected as a school’s DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of dependability, leadership and patriotism to an outstanding degree.

Miss Laskos is considered an exceptional student leader who is very involved in community service as well as being an award-winning student. She is a National Hispanic Recognition Scholar, a National Merit Commended Scholar, and a member of the National Spanish Honor Society. She also has won AP Scholar awards and the school’s history award and has participated in field hockey and track.

In addition, she was invited to participate in the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth and spent the 2008-09 school year in the Page Program in Washington, D.C.

She also is involved in many school clubs. Outside of school, her memberships in organizations include the Children of the American Revolution and the Greek Orthodox Youth Association. She also participated in the Shelton Youth Soccer Organization.
