WETHERSFIELD – More than 400 kindergartners through eighth graders at Corpus Christi School in Wethersfield and others raised more than $12,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation by participating in a walk-a-thon on April 15. The student council earlier in the year had chosen the foundation as the school’s social action project. Student Council member Rachel Dziatko of Marlborough, organizer and coordinator of the walk, was assisted by Abby Nolan, student council president. Teachers incorporated the materials donated by JDRF into their health curriculum over several weeks. Volunteers from JDRF kicked off the fund-raiser with a school assembly geared toward educating students about juvenile diabetes. Students, staff members and volunteers participated in the one- mile walk through the school’s neighborhood to draw attention to juvenile diabetes. The student council chose to raise funds for the JDRF because a first grader at Corpus Christi, Lauren Pickering of Wethersfield, has the disease. Lauren, Rachel and Leah Franzluebbers of Wethersfield, vice president of the Student Council, led the walk.
