MIDDLETOWN – Fifty-eight Xavier High School students have received national recognition for their outstanding scores on the National Spanish Examinations that were taken in March and April.

Three students were recognized as national winners, earning the Premio de Oro (Gold Medal) designation by scoring above the 95th percentile of those taking the exam.

The mission of the National Spanish Examination (NSE) is to recognize student achievement and to promote language proficiency in the study of the Spanish.

The three students designated as Premio de Oro are Francis Rowland of Cromwell, Carlos Mesquita of Wallingford and Edouard Nicaise of Hamden.

Premio de Plata (Silver Medal) winners, placing between the 85th and 94th percentile, are Nathaniel Clark of Guilford, Daniel Drabinski of Madison, Dominic Fogarasi of Middletown, James Schumann of Old Saybrook and Daniel Tomanelli of Cheshire.

Premio de Bronce (Bronze Medal) winners, placing between the 75th and 84th percentile, are Jeffrey Herrera of Middletown, Patrick Lenehan of Cheshire, Ronald Weir of Cobalt, Christian Cannata of Cromwell, George Gilbert of Portland, Dillon McCarthy of Old Lyme, Jeremy Dilzer of Berlin, Michael Lanza of Newington, Michael Massaro of East Haddam, Samuel Oeschger of Middletown, Thomas O’Rourke of Wethersfield and Bryan Szewczyk of Middletown.

Premio de Excelencia (Honorable Mention), for those scoring between the 50th and 74th percentile, went to David Johnson of Portland, John T.
