At the meeting, they determined the format and such other specifics as the theme, agenda and potential guest speakers for an Educational Forum that will take place Oct. 3 at the Omni Hotel in New Haven. In January 2008, the Office of Catholic Schools, in partnership with the archdiocese’s schools, introduced the document, "Common Threads," in which they identified priorities and implemented changes. In the pastoral letter Archbishop Henry J. Mansell wrote for "Common Threads," he asked the school community to come together again in 2012 to assess its progress toward the goals established in 2008. The educational forum is designed to provide that progress report as well as establish the course for the future of Catholic school education in the archdiocese. Commissioned by Dale R. Hoyt, superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Hartford, the steering committee comprises a pastor, principals, teachers, members of the Archdiocesan School Board and staff of the Office of Catholic Schools. The committee’s facilitator is Sister Dale McDonald of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, director of public policy and educational research for the National Catholic Educational Association in Arlington, Va. The co-chairs are Valerie A. Mara, the archdiocesan director of curriculum design, and Patricia Teufel-Driscoll, chair of the Archdiocesan School Board. Other members of the steering committee are Tom Maynard, principal of St. Mary Magdalen School in Oakville; Carolyn Daniels, technology coordinator at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Meriden; Father John Melnick, pastor of St. Bernard Parish in Enfield; Bob Cyr of the Archdiocesan School Board; Patti O’Neil-Tiezzi, principal of St. Dominic School in Southington; Patrick Clifford, principal of Notre Dame High School in West Haven; Larry Duffany of OCS; Anthony Azzara, principal of Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury; Valerie Mara of OCS, co-chair of the committee; Rita Barry of the Archdiocesan School Board; and Father Christopher Ford, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Branford.
