After the two tragedies of Petropolis, the streets of the city were filled with mud. In the sun, this clay dries up and turns into dust. With the mask released in open and closed environments, breathing in this dust can be harmful to health. Unimed Petrópolis infectious disease expert, Maurício Machado, explains why and offers tips on primary care.
The first of them, according to the specialist, is the constant use of a muzzle to prevent respiratory diseases. “I highlight here a factor that residents do not always consider an element in the prevention of such diseases: the humidity in our environment. We are entering, since March 20, the driest season, when it rains less, the sky is beautiful with its blue color, and the relative humidity of the air drops a lot, which causes drought And even the routine burning of low vegetation this time of year.It is recommended to wear masks, not only for the prevention of COVID-19, in all its forms, but also against our potential contamination through the biologically polluted atmosphere, which soon, in these coming weeks, we will be breathing on all roads public in the city.”
He explains that the dust on the streets of Petropolis came from mud runoff water, which, when dried, releases dusty contents, the physical composition of which will determine the severity of the diseases they cause: bronchitis, tracheitis, sinusitis, pneumonia, in the long run, Time, until progression to COPD, such as pulmonary emphysema, for example.
The infectious disease specialist also talked about care to be taken with street dust caused by floods. “Avoid performing in street environments where dust from dry mud disperses into the atmosphere.” Mauritius highlights the following measures:
- Use popular disposable masks when you go out in a dusty environment;
- take care of personal hygiene with a daily bath; If possible, as long as you are in a constantly dusty environment, shower at least twice a day, and wash the clothes you have been wearing since your last shower;
- improve body hydration practices, drink adequate amounts of fluids, and reduce salt intake in the diet;
- Wash the nostrils with saline, apply water to the face, and dry the face with paper towels. In addition, of course, care must be taken not to raise dust with unnecessary street cleanings, for example.
Air conditioner cleaning
Another important detail is the cleaning of air conditioner filters in offices, workrooms, dental clinics and medical offices. The doctor warns that duly qualified teams should be called up for such an activity.
