BOSTON – Msgr. David Liptak, executive editor of The Catholic Transcript, took first place for editorial writing in a biweekly or monthly newspaper in the 2011 New England Better Newspaper Competition, sponsored by the New England Newspaper & Press Association (NENPA). It was the first of seven awards that the Transcript received.

The award was for Msgr. Liptak’s September 2010 editorial "Altering the Record?," which deals with the frequent omission of "under God" from Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. A judge’s comment in a published list of winners states, "Readers stand to learn a lot from these well researched and well written editorials."

The paper also took second place in Advertising General Excellence, an award that prompted the judges to write: "First-rate newspaper by anyone’s standards. Excellent reproduction, superior news content (and writing), skillful makeup and a plethora of exceptional well-produced local ads. Their Web site is as helpful and user-friendly as their paper-and-ink publication."

Jack Sheedy, news editor, took second place in the Personality Photo competition for a photo of a young man and his pet dachshund, which appeared in the November 2010 issue; and third place for his October 2010 story, "Outreach effort aims at prostate cancer," which NENPA judges deemed "Good, solid coverage of an important public health issue."

Transcript reporter Mary Chalupsky earned third-place awards for a human interest feature story about singer José Feliciano ("Faith, music mix for the Felicianos") in the January 2011 issue; and for her local personality profile of Dominican Father Peter John Cameron ("Searching, reaching for the infinite") in the September 2010 issue. Judges deemed the Feliciano story an "up close look at a legendary musician, his family and his faith." Of the Father Cameron piece, they wrote that it "left the reader with a great sense of the subject," including his "spiritual ties to his artistic passions."

The staff of the Transcript also won a third-place award for general excellence as a "complete newspaper for its readers."

All awards were in the biweekly/monthly newspaper category. More than 1,400 entries were submitted by news outlets throughout New England, and more than 400 people attended the awards ceremony.

The award ceremony was held at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel and Towers on Feb. 11.
