Luke Nugent, a student at St. Rita School in Hamden, takes part in the international initiative called Hour of Code on Dec. 11 at the school.

Fifth-graders and math club members participated in the effort that aimed to have tens of millions of students around the globe write lines of computer coding between Dec. 8 and Dec. 14.

The young people worked with a game-like, self-directed tutorial video lectures by such well-known figures as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, as well as with popular games.

Fifth-grade teacher Allison Klobukowski introduced the initiative at St. Rita.

The school will host two open-house events in January for prospective students and their families.

A prekindergarten and kindergarten open house will be held from 1-3 p.m. Jan. 11. Teachers will be on hand.

Kindergarten through seventh grade classes will be open from 9-11 a.m. Jan. 12. Students will guide tours of the school.
