NEW HAVEN – A Corpus Christi procession to St. Joseph Church on Edwards Street will begin immediately after the 10 a.m. Mass on June 18 at St. Mary Church on Hillhouse Avenue. After Bemediction at St. Joseph, a parish picnic will take place on the St. Joseph Church grounds.
The two parishes will merge on June 29 as part of the pastoral plan for restructuring parishes in the Archdiocese of Hartford.
“It is most appropriate that our two parish communities mark our merging into one by joining together to solemnly participate in one of our Catholic Church’s most cherished traditional practices, the Corpus Christi procession,” said Dominican Father John Paul Walker, pastor.
Solemn processions on the solemnity of Corpus Christi have played a prominent part in Catholic worship since the 13th century. The sacred liturgies of Corpus Christi are intended to foster a renewed appreciation for the Catholic teaching on the real presence of Christ in the bread and wine offered at Mass.
Father Walker said, “Whatever may now separate our parishes in distance, we know that we are and will always be united in our love for Jesus present in the Eucharist."
The procession was organized by members of both churches. After the merger, there will be a single a single parish council, and other committees will be combined to better serve the single merged parish.
