Father Eduar Gutiérrez, parochial vicar of Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish in Meriden, walks with Emma Quinn as Mary and Trevor Bonfiglio as Joseph as they and other parishioners retrace the journey of Mary and Joseph to the inn during a posada (Spanish for lodging), on Dec. 6.
More than 60 parishioners participated in the Mexican tradition, re-enacting the journey of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem as they were refused lodging while looking for a place for the birth of Jesus.
The candlelit journey began at on the property of St. Mary Church, proceeded to St. Joseph Church and then ended at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. At each stop, they were denied entry to the inn, or posada, where the group read a reflection, prayed and sang a Christmas song. The three parishes merged into Our Lady Queen of Angels on June 29.
The posada is designed to bring participants into the heart of the Christmas mystery, the Christ Child. , the eternal Son of God born of the Virgin Mary.
