sherer3WATERFORD – Father Richard B. Sherer, 84, died on Dec. 11 at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford.

He was born on April 22, 1925, in Indianapolis, Ind. He went to St. Joseph Cathedral School in Hartford and studied at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield for six years and at Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining, N.Y.

He then spent two years with the United States Army’s 45th Infantry Division in Japan and Korea.

He returned to study for six years at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 15, 1958, at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church in Hartford by Archbishop Henry J. O’Brien.

Father Sherer was a temporary assistant at St. Thomas Parish in Goshen before assisting at St. Patrick’s in Farmington and then, in 1963, at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Hamden. He later assisted at Resurrection Parish in Wallingford (1969), St. Brigid Parish in the Elmwood section of West Hartford (1971) and at St. Augustine Parish in Hartford in 1978.

While in Hamden, he was the vocation director for the New Haven West Deanery and was a Cana Conference director and deanery director for the Marriage and Family Apostolate of the Hartford West Deanery.

Father Sherer returned to St. Brigid in 1987 as part of a team ministry. He became pastor emeritus of St. Brigid in 1994.

He retired in 1997 to Waterford.

Father Sherer was predeceased by his parents, Carl J. and Frances M. Sherer; his brothers, William J., Joseph J. and Father Carl J. Sherer; and his sister, Mary Margaret Dillon. He is survived by his brother, Thomas E. Sherer; and numerous nephews and nieces and their children.

Archbishop Henry J. Mansell was the principal celebrant of a Mass of Christian Burial on Dec. 16 at St. Brigid Church. Msgr. Douglas P. Clancy, Pastor of St. Mary Parish in Newington, preached the homily. Burial followed at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield.
