WEST HAVEN – Deacon John Wheeler, 79, of West Haven, died on Dec. 28, 2009. He was the son of the late Henry and Rose Welch Noel Wheeler.

He is survived by his nephew, Thomas Wheeler of Florida.

He was born on Oct. 27, 1930, and attended St. Lawrence School and West Haven High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force Security Police and served as West Haven’s coordinator of elderly services and municipal agent for 17 years as well as serving on numerous city commissions.

A lifelong member of St. Lawrence Parish, he was ordained a permanent deacon in 1994 by Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin and served at St. Lawrence Parish until his retirement in 2005. He served on the parish council, was active with several parish organizations and supervised the parish’s archives.

A fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and past grand knight of the Father Curtin Council, he also was a member of the West Haven Irish American Club, West Haven Historical Society and the West Haven Lodge of Elks.

Auxiliary Bishop Peter A. Rosazza celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial on Jan. 5 at St. Lawrence Church. Burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery followed.
