NEWINGTON – Deacon James K. Poland, 80, of Newington, died at Hartford Hospital on June 3, 2010.

He was born on Dec. 17, 1929, in Hartford, a son of the late James and Rosella (Gerrity) Poland.

He attended Immaculate Conception School and Hartford High before serving in the U.S. Army. After working as a Hartford police officer, he worked as a skilled machinist for most of his career and was a master locksmith before he retired.

He was ordained to the sacred order of deacon on June 23, 1974, by the late Bishop John F. Hackett. Until his retirement from active ministry in 1993, he served at St. John the Evangelist Parish in West Hartford. He was a member of the Church of the Incarnation in Wethersfield.

Deacon Poland is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Eleanor; his sons, Matthew Poland of Hartford, Thomas Poland of Florida and James Poland of Wethersfield; daughters Karen Regina, of Florida, and Mary, of Wethersfield; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother John.

Auxiliary Bishop Christie A. Macaluso celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial on June 9 at the Church of the Incarnation.

Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery in Rocky Hill followed.
