WINDSOR – Helene M. (McDonnell) O’Connell, 96, of Pocopson, Pa., formerly of West Hartford and Windsor and the widow of the late J. Benedict O’Connell, died on July 12, 2010.

She was born July 9, 1914, in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of the late Timothy and Anna (Begley) McDonnell. She graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Hartford.

A registered nurse, she had worked for many years in hospitals, doctors’ offices and schools in Windsor and Hartford.

She is survived by a son, Daniel P. O’Connell of Glastonbury; a daughter, Mary Ann Maggitti of West Chester, Pa.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, Dr. Paul B. O’Connell and J. Benedict O’Connell Jr., and a grandson, John T. O’Connell.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 16 at St. Augustine Church in South Glastonbury. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford.

Donations in Mrs. O’Connell’s name may be made to the John T. O’Connell Clinical Cancer Research Fund, St. Francis Hospital, 114 Woodland St., Hartford, CT 06105; or to St. Augustine Church, 55 Hopewell Road, South Glastonbury, CT 06073; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
