MIDDLETOWN – Sister M. Ancillita Lengyel, 94, a Sister of Mercy for 76 years, died on Nov. 8, 2010, in Middletown.

She was born in Naugatuck, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Wilcox) Lengyel, and entered the Sisters of Mercy at age 18 on July 2, 1934. Not many years later, she began a career in education, teaching grades three through eight in Catholic schools throughout the state, including at St. John in Middletown, where she was also principal for 14 years.

Sister Ancillita later served at St. Elizabeth House in Hartford, a ministry of Mercy Housing and Shelter, for six years before retiring in 1991. She continued to minister at St. John Parish, bringing meals to and visiting the sick and welcoming neighbors into her home.

Sister Ancillita was predeceased by four brothers, Leo, Ron, Joe and Fran. Survivors include many nieces, nephews, cousins and Sisters of Mercy.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 11 at St. John Church. Burial followed on Nov. 12 in St. Mary Cemetery in West Hartford.
