HAMDEN – Sister Mary Alma Tinervia, of Sacred Heart Manor, a member of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, died on Dec. 25, 2010, at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford.

She was born on June 11, 1936, in San Jose, Calif., a daughter of the late Phillip and Angelina Misuracca Tinervia. She entered the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Aug. 30, 1953, professed first vows on Aug. 25, 1956, and made her perpetual vows on Aug. 25, 1960.

Sister Alma earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Maryville University in St. Louis, Mo. She spent more than 40 years teaching in elementary schools, at St. Michael and St. Anthony in New Haven and St. Raphael in Bridgeport, as well as in Pennsylvania, Missouri, California, Florida and New York.

She retired to and became a clerical assistant at Sacred Heart Manor in 2000. For the last several years of her life, Sister Alma resided at the Sister Anne Virginie Grimes Health Center in New Haven.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Angelo, Peter, Vincent and Salvatore; and sisters, Nina Giammona and Rosalie Tinervia. Sister Alma leaves a sister, Vivian Tinervia; nieces; nephews; and her religious community.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Dec. 28 in the chapel at Sacred Heart Manor. Burial was at All Saints Cemetery in North Haven.
