HAMDEN – Sister Mary Nicoletta Petillo, 97, a member of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, died peacefully on Feb. 21, 2011, at Sacred Heart Manor.
Sister Mary Nicoletta was born on Sept. 5, 1913, in New York, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary (Barone) Petillo. She entered the Apostles of the Sacred Heart on Jan. 29, 1939, in New Haven, and professed her first vows Aug. 24, 1941, and perpetual vows Aug. 15, 1946.
She spent most of her more than 60 years of active ministry teaching in elementary and high schools in Connecticut, at St. Michael School in New Haven and Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden; as well as in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Missouri and California. She also taught at the Collegio Santa Margarieta in LaPlata, Argentina, from 1971-74. In the later years of her ministry, Sister Mary Nicoletta served in parish ministry in California and then in pastoral ministry in St. Ann Parish and at Arden House, both in Hamden.
Sister Mary Nicoletta held a bachelor's degree in education from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Mo.; a master’s degree in education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa.; and a diploma in Spanish from the Real Universidad Maria Cristina in El Escoriol, Spain.
She retired in 1987 to Sacred Heart Manor, where she ministered to the sisters as a nursing aide until her health no longer enabled her to do so. She then devoted her ministry entirely to prayer.
