DANVILLE, Pa. – Sister M. Gabriella (Cesarina) LaGanga, a member of the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius, died on March 4 at Emmanuel Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.
The daughter of Joseph and Veronica (Bilos) LaGanga, she was born on Aug. 28, 1928, in Torrington. She graduated from Sacred Heart School in Torrington and Torrington High School.
She entered the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius on March 1, 1947, was received as a novice on Aug. 13 and made her first profession of vows on Aug. 11, 1949.
Sister Gabriella received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood University in Scranton, Pa., and a Master of Arts degree in speech pathology from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.
She taught in parish elementary schools in Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania. For five years, she was a reading teacher at the Marianhill Clinic at Phoenixville, Pa., and then was a speech consultant/therapist at the Vanguard Schools in Paoli, Pa., in 1967-68.
From 1991-98, Sister Gabriella was the director of religious education at Sacred Heart Parish in Torrington. She also was a director of religious education in Olyphant, Pa., and, for three of those years, was also the pastoral assistant.
For a number of years, Sister Gabriella was engaged in ministry to the elderly residents and sisters at Maria Joseph Manor and Emmanuel Center in Danville.
Sister Gabriella is survived by her brother Joseph of Harwinton; sister-in-law Madeline LaGanga of Litchfield and nephews Joseph LaGanga of Torrington and Mark LaGanga of New York City.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on March 10 at Maria Hall in Danville. Burial followed in the sisters’ cemetery there.
