WEST HARTFORD – Sister Mary Paul (Genevieve Theresa) Mason, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, West Hartford, died on Aug. 12, 2011, at the provincial house of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
She was born on Aug. 3, 1914, in New Haven, a daughter of the late George Francis Mason and Frances Marie (Tighe) Mason.
She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 8, 1934, and professed her perpetual vows on Aug. 24, 1940. She received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in education, as well as a doctorate in philosophy, all at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Sister Mary Paul taught in schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford, then became a professor of philosophy at the Diocesan Sisters College in West Hartford. From 1953-91, she was the director of studies for the Sisters of St. Joseph of West Hartford. She also taught at St. Joseph College in West Hartford, and was her community’s supervisor of schools in the province from 1989-95. She also served as the provincial archivist.
Sister Mary Paul was predeceased by her sisters, Marie Mason Prutting and Agnes Mason; and her brother, Joseph Mason. She is survived by her religious community, nephews, Joseph and George Mason, and a niece, Margaret Mason.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 16 at the Convent Mary Immaculate. Burial in the Sisters of St. Joseph Cemetery followed. Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 27 Park Road, West Hartford, CT 06119.
