stan111HARTFORD – Father Stanley T. Kennedy, 70, a member of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette, died on Oct. 20, 2011.

Father Kennedy was born on Sept. 13, 1941, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of Stanislaus and Ethel (Smith) Kennedy. He attended schools in New York and in Nashua, N.H., before entering the La Salette Seminary high school in Hartford in 1955. He entered the La Salette Novitiate in Bloomfield in 1961 and professed first vows on July 2, 1962. He made his perpetual profession on Sept. 19, 1966, and was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1970, at the former La Salette Seminary in Ipswich, Mass.

His studies for the priesthood took place at La Salette seminaries in Altamont, N.Y., and Ipswich, as well as at the Gregorian University in Rome. In 1976, Father Kennedy received a master’s degree in pastoral counseling from Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., and in 1992, a Ph.D. in religious studies from Boston University.

In 1971, Father Kennedy became a member of the team directorate for scholastics and was elected to the local house council in Ipswich. In 1972, he was named assistant pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Hartford and, the following year, he was on that parish’s pastoral team.

In 1975, he became an associate in the Renewal Center apostolate in Cheshire, and he later ministered at the La Salette Counseling Center in Ipswich. In 1982, Father Kennedy’s ministry included counseling, spiritual direction and Bible study sessions at the Christian Life Center in Cheshire.

Father Kennedy also held teaching positions at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., and later at St. Joseph College in West Hartford.

In 1997, Father Kennedy and others began a Centering Prayer Group which continues to meet in Cheshire.

For several summers, Father Kennedy assisted at St. Thomas Becket Parish in Cheshire. He also offered adult education programs in the parish, along with preaching novenas and holding parish renewals and retreats in parishes and retreat centers throughout New England. He spoke frequently about the work of the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging (CFCA) at parishes around the country.

Father Kennedy had resided at the La Salette Residence in Hartford.

In addition to his La Salette confreres, Father Kennedy is survived by a brother, James, of New York City; and two sisters, Jean Kennedy of Cooperstown, N.Y., and Mary O’Neill of Nashua.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Oct. 24 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Burial followed in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield.
