As we celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the Archdiocese, we look back… on July 15, 1872 when the first baptism was recorded at St. Peter's Church, New Britain. The child's name was, Joseph Graff.

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. – Ursuline Sister Mary Joseph McCarthy died on Dec. 20, 2011, at the Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood.

She was born March 19, 1914, in Fethard, a village in Tipperary, Ireland. She entered the Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk on Jan. 10, 1928, and professed her final vows seven years later.

Sister Joseph ministered for many years in Catholic education, including at Our Lady of Victory in West Haven and St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hartford. In 1969, she returned to Our Lady of Victory to direct the parish’s religious education program.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated on Dec. 27 at the St. Ursula Center Chapel in Blue Point.
