WORCESTER, Mass. – Sister Helena Omar, 96, of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, died on March 26, 2012, at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center.

Also known as Sister Loretta Marie Omar, she was born in Dorchester, Mass., a daughter of the late Tracy W. and Helena (Mitchell) Omar.

She entered religious life in 1934 and graduated from Emmanuel College in Boston before earning a master’s degree in education from Boston University.

She taught for 40 years at Sisters of Notre Dame schools, including at East Catholic High School in Manchester as well as in Bridgeport; West Newton, Mass.; and Providence, R.I. She retired from teaching in 1976, but continued as the province secretary for her community in Fairfield. She retired again in 1995.

Survivors include nieces, nephews and her religious community. She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Omar Quinn, Ann Omar Curley and  Rita Omar Collins; and her brothers, Tracy and Francis Omar.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on March 29 at Notre Dame du Lac Chapel in Worcester.

Burial at Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery followed.
