WEST HARTFORD – Sister Mary Anne (Catherine Anne) Roddy, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, West Hartford, died on March 27, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford at age 87. She was in her 70th year of religious life.
She was born on Jan. 23, 1926, in Stamford, a daughter of the late Michael Joseph Roddy and Anne Mary (Pilkington) Roddy. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on Sept. 24, 1943, and professed her perpetual vows on Aug. 24, 1949.
Sister Mary Anne earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education at the Diocesan Sisters College in West Hartford, a Master of Education degree from Fairfield University and a Certificate of Pastoral Care from Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass.
She taught and was principal of schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford and Diocese of Bridgeport, including at St. Joseph School in New Britain and Our Lady of Sorrows School in Hartford, as well as in Lee, Mass. She also was a pastoral care associate for seven years at St. Joseph Hospital in Stamford.
For 21 years, Sister Mary Anne ministered as the property/maintenance manager of her community’s West Hartford provincial house.
In addition to her religious community, Sister Mary Anne is survived by three nieces and a cousin. She was predeceased by her brother Joseph and her sisters Mary Hilder and Rita Roddy.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 7 p.m. April 1 in St. Joseph Chapel at the Convent of Mary Immaculate in West Hartford. Burial followed in the Sisters of St. Joseph Cemetery in West Hartford.
