HAMDEN – Eleanor Gavigan Curran passed away at her home with her family at her side on Christmas Eve, 2013. She was 89.

Mrs. Curran was the mother of Father Vincent Curran Jr., pastor of St. Christopher Parish in West Hartford; Robert Curran of East Haven and Laura Curran of Northampton, Mass.; and was the sister of Mary Santillo of Wallingford and Betty O’Brien and Paul Gavigan, both of East Haven. She had two grandsons and many nieces and nephews.

She was born on Sept. 30, 1924, in West Haven, a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Dickinson Gavigan. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by Vincent Curran Sr., her husband of 48 years; and brothers Edward, Milton and Robert Gavigan.

Mrs. Curran was a bookkeeper, retired from Brescome Barton Co. and, before that, she was employed by the New Haven Railroad. She was an active communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Hamden for more than 50 years and also assisted the parish in numerous administrative capacities.

She also was active in the Hamden Democratic Party for over 50 years and recently received an award from the Hamden Democratic Town Committee honoring her half-century of service. She also assisted on the state and federal levels and was active in those campaigns, as well. She attended numerous state and national conventions.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Dec. 30 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Hamden. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hamden.
