HAMDEN – Sister M. Ernestine Desiderio, a member of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, died peacefully on Feb. 18, 2014, at Sacred Heart Manor.

She was born on June 18, 1918, in McKees Rocks, Pa., a daughter of the late Giovanni and Rosa Tarquinio Desiderio.

She entered the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Aug. 14, 1940, in New Haven, professed first vows Aug. 24, 1943, and professed her perpetual vows July 1, 1947.

Sister Ernestine earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Fordham University in New York City and a Master of Arts degree in sociology from Fairfield University.

She began her ministry by teaching at St. Anthony School in New Haven. Thereafter, she also taught in Connecticut at Sacred Heart Academy as well as in California, Missouri, New York and Pennsylvania. She was principal at Santa Maria School in the Bronx and at schools in Connellsville and Butler, Pa.

Sister Ernestine retired in 1994 to Sacred Heart Manor, where she ministered at the Clelian Adult Day Center.

Besides her parents, Sister Ernestine was predeceased by her brothers Ernie and Ray, and her sister, Helen Masciola. She is survived by a nephew, nieces and her religious community.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the chapel of the manor on Feb. 20. Burial followed in All Saints Cemetery in North Haven.
