WOODBURY – Deacon Horace G. Hamor Jr., 67, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on March 12, 2014, at his home. He was married for 38 years to Mary Elaine (Lucian) Hamor.

Deacon Hamor was born on April 9, 1946, in Blackpool Lancashire, England, a son of Wendolene (Hamilton) Hamor of Pensacola, Fla., and the late Horace G. Hamor Sr.

He graduated from Hope High School in Providence, R.I., and earned an associate’s degree from Post College. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in marketing from the University of New Haven.

He worked at the Southern New England Telephone Co.; Rockwell International; Philips, Brooks & Gladwin; and General DataComm Inc.; and was the business manager for St. Teresa of Avila Church, where he worked for over 10 years until the time of his illness.

He was ordained a permanent deacon in June 2006 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Hartford.

He volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America for more than 30 years. He served as the district chairman of Tamarack District from 1975-77 and district chairman of the Mattatuck District. He was also cub master of Pack 54 in Woodbury, receiving the Silver Beaver Award in March of 1992.

Deacon Hamor was an adjunct professor at Post University and was also the first president of the Post College Alumni Association from June 1981 to June 1983. He also was the president of Connecticut Friends of Adopted Children Inc. and St. Teresa’s Men’s Club. He taught religious education for a number of years, and was a hospice volunteer and chaplain at Waterbury Hospital.

In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include a son, Justin Hamor of Stamford; a daughter, Julianna Hamor of Newport, R.I.; a brother, Ian Hamor of Pensacola, Fla.; and a sister, Wendolyn Medlock of New Mexico.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on March 17 at St. Teresa of Avila Church. Burial followed in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
