WEST HARTFORD – Sister Jane Frances (Alice Mary) McGurkin, of the Sisters of Mercy, died on March 18, 2014.

She was a daughter of the late Francis and Catherine (Sheehan) McGurkin. After graduating from Mount St. Joseph Academy, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in June 1942 at age 18.

She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from St. Joseph College, as it was then known, in West Hartford. Fifty-eight years of her life were dedicated to the ministry of education at every level, from grade two through college, at Salve Regina in Newport, R.I. It included being principal of St. Peter School in Danbury, St. Joseph School in Norwalk and St. Mary School in Milford. Before retiring in 2000, Sister Jane directed a day care program at St. Francis School in New Haven.

Sister Jane was predeceased by her brothers Gerald and Francis (“Skip”). She is survived by her brother Robert, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; her sister, Ann Carole Moylan of Durham, N.C.; many nieces and nephews and the sisters in her religious community.

 At Sister Jane’s request, all services were private.
