CROMWELL – Deacon John F. Dempsey Sr., 84, of Cromwell, husband of Catherine (Poland) Dempsey, died on May 10, 2014, at Middlesex Health Care Center in Middletown.

He was born in Hartford, a son of the late Patrick J. and Margaret (Butler) Dempsey, and had lived in Cromwell since 1985. He owned and operated the J and K Painting and Roofing Co. for many years.

He was ordained to the permanent diaconate on Dec. 11, 1977, by Archbishop John F. Whealon at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. He served as a deacon and taught Bible study groups at St. Augustine and Immaculate Conception parishes in Hartford. Deacon Dempsey also was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Besides his wife, survivors include four sons, John F. Dempsey Jr. of Newington, and James R., Robert R. and William M. Dempsey, all of Cromwell; four daughters, Catherine A. Durkin of Newington, Carol R. Griffin of Rocky Hill, Susan V. Hopkins of Windsor Locks and Maureen M. Lozinski of Cromwell; a brother, Richard Dempsey of Virginia; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Dempsey; and a sister, Patricia Keating.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on May 15 at St. Augustine Church. Burial with military honors followed in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield.
