HAMDEN – Sister Marie (Angelita) Christofani of Hamden, a member of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, died on Jan. 16, 2015, at Sacred Heart Manor, surrounded by her religious community. She was in religious life for 77 years.

She was born on April 9, 1917, in New Haven, a daughter of the late David and Lena Guidugli Christofani. She entered the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Aug. 23, 1934, in New Haven; professed her first vows on Aug. 26, 1937, in New Haven; and pronounced her perpetual vows on Aug. 19, 1943, in Oakmont, Pa.

Sister Marie’s years of service included ministering at St. Anthony Home and St. Donato Parish in New Haven, teaching at Sacred Heart School in New Haven and doing parish catechetical work at St. Ann Parish in Hamden. She also taught at schools in California, Florida, New York and Pennsylvania. Sister Marie also was on the first nursing staff caring for the aged and infirm sisters at Mount Sacred Heart and then at Sacred Heart Manor.

Sister Marie retired from active ministry in 2001 and then adopted a ministry of prayer.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Nick, John, Charles and Don; and her sister Mary. Sister Marie is survived by her three nieces, Barbara Christofani of New Haven, Louise Scanlon of  Garden City, N.Y., and Rosemary Soupiset of Georgia; a nephew, Charles Christolon, of Newburgh, N.Y.; and her religious family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Jan. 19 in the chapel at Sacred Heart Manor. Burial in All Saints Cemetery in North Haven followed. Contributions in Sister Marie’s name may be made to the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 295 Benham St., Hamden, CT 06514-2801.
