CHESHIRE – John Leonard Peter Ellinger, 91, of New York and Cheshire, son of the late Margaret (Leonard) and Charles Ellinger of New Rochelle, N.Y., passed away on Feb. 7, 2015, at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford.
He was educated in New Rochelle, N.Y., and later moved to the Wallingford and Meriden area.
Mr. Ellinger was station manager of WJMJ-FM, the non-commercial radio station of the Archdiocese of Hartford, which Archbishop John F. Whealon founded in 1976 as a way to spread the Gospel through inspiring messages and easy-listening music. Mr. Ellinger managed the station for more than 35 years, leaving that position in 2008.
He also had managed or consulted for WNHC radio and television, WHAY, WDRC, WPLR, WICC, WPOP, WNAB and WATR.
A past-president of the Connecticut Broadcasting Association, Mr. Ellinger was active in numerous civic and fund-raising ventures, spoke at numerous charitable events and received awards from professional and community group.
He also was vice president of All Media in Cheshire for more than 40 years and continued to be involved with it until his death.
In addition to private radio sectors, he was the faculty station manager at Choate-Rosemary Hall’s radio station .in Wallingford.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Chain) Ellinger; daughter Ingrid Sadelle Ellinger-Doviak; grandchildren Donovan and Cordelia Doviak; a cousin; and two nieces and three nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters Muriel Ellinger O’Brien of Carlisle, Pa., and Maurine Ellinger Sturken and brother Charles Ellinger of Hamden.
All funeral arrangements are private at Mr. Ellinger’s request. Funeral services with full military honors will take place on the date of the Ellingers’ 46th wedding anniversary.
