WEST HARTFORD – Sister Marie Coffey (Bernard Mary) of the Sisters of Mercy died on April 17, 2015, at St. Mary Home, surrounded by her community.

She was born on Oct. 24, 1924, one of eight children of the late Frank and Mary Josephine Loughnane Coffey. She was educated in Hartford and worked for three years at Caledonian Insurance Co. prior to entering the Sisters of Mercy on Dec. 28, 1945. She professed her religious vows on June 28, 1948.

Sister Marie received a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Joseph College, now the University of St. Joseph.

She taught in multiple Catholic schools in the Hartford Archdiocese over three decades. Sister Marie also was an administrative assistant in a variety of ministries, including as a school librarian, and was coordinator of religious education programs in New Haven and St. Justin Parish in Hartford. Later on, she cared for the sick and elderly through volunteer service at Mercyknoll and as a residential care assistant at St. Mary Home.

Sister Marie is survived by her sister, Jean Coffey Gronda of Manchester, as well as scores of nieces and nephews and her religious community. She was predeceased by her brothers, Edward and Frank; and her sisters, Anne (“Nancy”), Eileen, Elizabeth and Marjorie.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated on April 22 at St. Mary Home. Burial followed in St. Mary Cemetery.
