WEST HARTFORD – Sister Patricia Corcoran (Sister Thomas Marie), a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, West Hartford, died at St. Francis Hospital on April 18, 2015. She was 79 years old and was in her 61st year of religious life.
She was born in Waterbury on July 11, 1935, a daughter of the late John J. and Catherine (Braziel) Corcoran. She entered her order on Sept. 1, 1954, and celebrated her perpetual profession of vows on March 1, 1962.
Sister Patricia earned a bachelor’s degree in education and theology from Diocesan Sisters College, a master’s degree in the classics from Boston College, a sixth-year degree in history from Central Connecticut State University and a master’s degree in pastoral ministry from St. Joseph College, now the University of St. Joseph, in West Hartford. She continued her education as a Fulbright Scholar in the classics and at the American Academy in Rome.
Sister Patricia ministered in elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford and taught at the former South Catholic High School in Hartford, St. Paul Catholic High School in Bristol, Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury and Notre Dame High School in West Haven. During her last 16 years in ministry, she directed the Pastoral Care Department at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury. She retired to St. Joseph Infirmary at the provincial house in West Hartford in 2009.
Sister Patricia is survived by her religious community and her sister, Helen Carmody, and also by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her three brothers, John F., Thomas E. and William J. Corcoran.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 23 in St. Joseph Chapel at the Convent of Mary Immaculate in West Hartford. Interment followed in the Sisters of St. Joseph Cemetery.
