HAMDEN – Sister Ursula Bongiovanni of Hamden, a member of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, died May 29, 2015, at Sacred Heart Manor.

She was born in New Kensington, Pa., on May 23, 1913, a daughter of the late Calisto and Angela Carpegna Bongiovanni. She entered the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Dec. 29, 1947, and professed her first vows on Aug. 22, 1950, and her perpetual vows on Aug. 24, 1953, in New Haven.

In her almost 65 years in religious life, Sister Ursula touched many people through her teaching, administrative service and love of music. She was well-known for directing the Sacred Heart Academy “operettas,” as they were originally called, and she taught at the academy from 1951-74 and 1975-80. Sister Ursula also taught in the Mount Sacred Heart College and then later served as the registrar and dean. She also was her religious community’s provincial secretary and provincial councilor.

She was principal at Blessed Sacrament Junior High School in Hamden and at St. Rita School in Connellsville, Pa. She also taught at Sacred Heart School in Pinellas Park, Fla. After teaching, Sister Ursula was an administrative assistant in the Chancery in the Diocese of St. Petersburg, Fla. In 1993, she served in parish ministry, first in Pinellas Park, then in West Palm Beach, Fla., as a volunteer in the parish health care ministry.

Upon her retirement to Sacred Heart Manor in 2001, Sister Ursula assisted at the manor and at the Clelian Adult Day Center.

Sister Ursula earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in social studies from Albertus Magnus College in New Haven and a Master of Arts degree in American history from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Carmeline Gatto; and brothers John, Peter and Benjamin. She is survived by three nieces; three nephews and her religious family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on June 1 in the manor chapel. Burial followed in All Saints Cemetery in North Haven.
