WEST HARTFORD – Sister Catherine Mary Dowling (Sister Mariella), of the Sisters of Mercy, died peacefully on June 5, 2015, at St. Mary Home.

She was born in Waterbury on July 13, 1934, a daughter of the late Edward and Helen (Bergin) Dowling. She attended St. Margaret School and Waterbury Catholic High School. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1952, and professed her vows on Aug. 16, 1955.

She became an elementary school teacher upon receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Diocesan Teachers’ College in Madison. Sister Catherine Mary ministered for many years in Naugatuck, New Haven, Norwich and Hartford, and was assistant principal at St. James School in Manchester.

A reading specialist and dedicated teacher, she became a consultant to the Mercy Reading Clinic in West Hartford, where she tutored and fostered love for reading. She then served as receptionist for Mercy Center at Madison until her retirement in 2007.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Helen Walesky and Rosemary Babin, and brother Edward Dowling. She is survived by her godson and nephew, Don Walesky, nieces and nephews into a third generation, and her religious community.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary Home on June 10. Burial followed the next day in St. Mary Cemetery.
