HAMDEN – Sister Electa LaGrutta of Hamden, a member of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, died peacefully on May 18, 2015, at Sacred Heart Manor.

She was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Dec. 5, 1925, a daughter of the late Anthony and Maria Petrocelli LaGrutta. She entered the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Dec. 31, 1940, and professed her first vows Aug. 24, 1943, in New Haven.

Sister Electa earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and a Master of Education degree in administration and supervision from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

She began her ministry in education teaching at St. Anthony School in New Haven. Thereafter, she taught at schools in California, Illinois, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. She also served as supervisor of elementary schools and director of primary education for the Department of Education in the Diocese of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Sister Electa retired to Sacred Heart Manor and a ministry of prayer in 2006.

She was predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Sister Laurentine LaGrutta of the same congregation, Maria LaGrutta and Theresa Ciarlo. She is survived by two nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and her religious community.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 19 in the manor chapel. Burial was in All Saints Cemetery in North Haven.
