NEW BRITAIN – Sister Mary Benedict (Genevieve) Wanat, a member of the Daughters of Mary of the Immaculate Conception, died on April 16, 2016.

A New Haven native, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Wanat.

She entered the Daughters of Mary on Aug. 10, 1941.

Sister Mary Benedict received her Bachelor of Science degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., and a Master of Fine Arts Education degree from Columbia University in New York City.

She taught at Sacred Heart in New Britain and at St. Paul  in Kensington, as well as in Ware, Mass., and Harrison and Elizabeth, N.J.

Sister Mary Benedict is survived by her sister-in-law, Lydia Wanat, and her nieces, Janet Trainor and Nancy Morrison.

She was predeceased by her brother Edward.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on April 20 in the chapel at Marian Heights, the motherhouse. Burial was in Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
