As we celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the Archdiocese, we look back… on July 15, 1872 when the first baptism was recorded at St. Peter's Church, New Britain. The child's name was, Joseph Graff.

obit fr russell richard webBLOOMFIELD – Father Richard R. Russell, 79, former pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in West Simsbury, passed away May 19, 2016.

Born and raised in Hartford, he was the son of the late Richard and Catherine (O’Keefe) Russell. He was educated at the St. Joseph Cathedral School, then at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, where he continued his education until 1956. He studied philosophy at St. Bernard Seminary in Rochester, N.Y., from 1956-58.

He completed studies in theology and graduated from the North American College in Rome in 1962.

He leaves his sister, Denise Rancourt of Clinton; six nephews;  six nieces;  and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Catherine Claffey.

A parish Mass was celebrated on May 24 at St. Catherine of Siena Church, where Archbishop Leonard P. Blair was principal celebrant of a Mass of Christian Burial the next morning.

Burial was to take place privately at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield.
