HARTFORD – Deacon Stephen J. Kelly, 84, passed away on July 8, 2016, after a long illness.

He was born in Waterbury on Nov. 5, 1931, the son of Stephen and Catherine (Delaney) Kelly.

He was a retired permanent deacon for the Archdiocese of Hartford and had served at St. Pius X Parish in Wolcott.

He also had been a Waterbury police officer, director of training at the Municipal Police Training Council and a teacher at Wolcott High School and Ansonia High School.

Deacon Kelly was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Marilyn (Dunn) Kelly. He also was predeceased by a daughter, Sherilyn Hurlburt, and his brothers, Robert and Thomas Kelly.

He leaves two brothers, Joseph and Richard Kelly; and one sister, Barbara Lipman; four daughters, Barbara Allen, Cynthia Sullivan, Linda Burns and Stacy Malenfant; one son, Stephen Kelly; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Auxiliary Bishop Christie A. Macaluso celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial on July 18 at St. Pius X Church in Wolcott.
