Sister Elizabeth (Mary Charlotte) Travers of the Sisters of Mercy died peacefully on Nov. 2, 2017, at St. Mary Home in West Hartford.

She was born on April 15, 1921, in Berlin, N.H., a daughter of the late John F. and Annie (Murtagh) Travers. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on June 24, 1938, and professed her religious vows on Jan. 2, 1941. For the next three decades, She taught primary-grade children in multiple Catholic elementary schools throughout Connecticut, becoming an expert first-grade teacher.

Sister Elizabeth earned a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Joseph College, now the University of St. Joseph, in West Hartford and received Master of Arts degrees in religious studies from Boston College and in reading from the University of Bridgeport.

She was the director of religious education at St. Mark the Evangelist Parish in West Hartford for almost a decade before returning to her first love, preschool children, as director of the School for Young Children at the University of St. Joseph.

She then returned to her native Berlin to minister to her sibling Margie until Margie's death, and while there, Sister Elizabeth participated in parish ministry at St. Kieran Church. She returned to West Hartford to enjoy retirement until, in her 79th year as a sister, her own health failed.

Sister Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents and four sisters. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, cousins and the Sisters of Mercy.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Nov. 8 at St. Mary Home Chapel. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery. Donations may be sent to the Sisters of Mercy, 25 Prescott Street West Hartford, CT 06110.
