WEST HARTFORD – Sister Mary Jane Waddy of the Sisters of Mercy died on April 26.

She was born on Aug. 23, 1917, in New York City. She graduated from the former Mount St. Joseph Academy and St. Joseph College in West Hartford. She was a substitute teacher and worked for the state of Connecticut Teachers’ Retirement Board prior to entering the Sisters of Mercy on July 1, 1949.

Sister Mary Jane taught in Catholic schools throughout the state before becoming the first woman to hold a position in the Marriage Tribunal for the Archdiocese of Hartford. After a year of ministry at Maryhurst Retreat House in Pinehurst, N.C., she became a case promoter for the Matrimonial Tribunal Office for the Diocese of Covington, Ky.

After returning to Connecticut, Sister Mary Jane engaged in various ministries, including as a pastoral associate at Sacred Heart Parish in Vernon, secretary at Lauralton Hall in Milford and assistant bookkeeper at St. Joseph College and the Greater Hartford Campus Ministry. She also assisted the Sisters of Mercy justice coordinator for several years.

Sister Mary Jane was predeceased by two brothers, John Dunstan and William Waddy Jr. She is survived by many nieces and nephew.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 29 in the chapel at St. Mary Home. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery in West Hartford.
