TORRINGTON – Father Joseph A. Graziani, former Pastor of St. Peter Parish, died on May 3 at Litchfield Woods Health Care Center at the age of 88.

Born on Dec. 28, 1920, he was a son of the late Fausto and Annunziata Graziani of Torrington. He graduated in 1937 from Torrington High School and entered St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield. He completed his theological studies in 1945 at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained to the priesthood on Dec. 22, 1945, by the late Bishop Henry J. O’Brien at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Hartford.

Between 1946 and 1969, Father Graziani was assistant pastor at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Waterbury, St. Patrick in New Haven, St. Mary in Derby and St. Luke in Hartford. He also served as administrator and then Pastor at St. Augustine Church in South Glastonbury.

He returned to his native Torrington in 1970, when he was assigned as administrator of St. Peter Church. He became its pastor in April 1971 and remained there until his retirement in August 1989.

He is survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his four siblings.

A parish Mass was celebrated on May 6 at St. Peter’s, where Archbishop Henry J. Mansell celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial the next morning. Father Christopher M. Tiano, Pastor of the Torrington Cluster of parishes, was the homilist.
