WEST HARTFORD – Sister Kathleen Murphy (Sister Mary Karen), of the Sisters of Mercy, died on June 4 at Hartford Hospital.

She was born on Jan. 7, 1926, in Torrington, a daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (White) Murphy. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1950, in Madison, and professed her religious vows on June 29, 1953.

After completing her degree in education, Sister Kathleen taught in several schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford, including St. Margaret and Sacred Heart, both in Waterbury; St. Mary in Derby, where she also served as principal; and St. Joseph in Meriden where she ministered for 19 years as a teacher and later as volunteer support staff.

She continued to volunteer after her retirement, visiting and knitting shawls for the sick and homebound.

Sister Kathleen is survived by her sister, Gertrude Corrodo of Torrington; a niece, grandniece and grandnephew; several cousins; and the Sisters of Mercy.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 9 in the chapel at St. Mary Home in West Hartford. Interment was in St. Mary Cemetery.
